npr \"talk of the nation\" report on online gambling
caught part of this while driving today. seemed pretty interesting. i only heard the end where they were talking about the wto battle with antigua. gonna listen to the rest now.
totn is one of npr's most distributed broadcasts so i think their slant is important. esp since totn is considered one of the super liberal npr broadcasts. btw, who is will detweiler? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=13975457 |

Re: npr \"talk of the nation\" report on online gambling
From the clip's intro:
"The cards are digital but the cash is real in online gambling. There's a fortune being won, and lost, on the Web, even though it's illegal in the United States. Players go to surprising lengths to enter the virtual casino and place their bets." Yup, this is the kind of precision of language I'd expect from a solid news outlet. Oh, wait, this is NPR. |

Re: npr \"talk of the nation\" report on online gambling
Interesting that the lawyer guy said it's not illegal to gamble within state lines, only across state lines. So you could have a californiapoker.com and it'd be completely legal...

Re: npr \"talk of the nation\" report on online gambling
This host is such a douche. Blah blah blah, transferring money to gaming sites is money laundering, blah blah blah, some guy calls in "ZOMG ONLINE POKER IS RIGGED," blah blah blah, online poker is illegal. Awesome research chief.

Re: npr \"talk of the nation\" report on online gambling
though you guys might not launder money, or know anybody who does, that is a pretty reasonable argument. there are different degree's and types of money laundering, and online poker is a very very easy way of legitimizing a bunch of illegitimate cash very quickly. i could think of a hundred different ways you could do it without raising any problems for yourself. i didn't listen to the link, but did they talk about tax evasion as being a problem in their broadcast also? i would think thats a big issue for the govt. what it comes down to is if the govt. can't make the percent they want to off something, then [censored] it, it becomes illegal. same reason why weed is still illegal IMO, because the govt can't figure out how to tax it in a way to make it worth their while. alcohol, cigarette's, casino gambling are all things that the govt can tax you on pretty easily and therefore no matter how bad people think they are for you, as long as they make enough they could care less
