Re: Tom Paine\'s Bones
I love Thomas Paine. Though doesn't most of his writing conflict with the general 2+2 guys? He's pro-democracy, a statist, and believes universal suffrage to be the most important of liberties.

[/ QUOTE ] 2 of my fav quotes by anyone: "Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one." - Thomas Paine "That government is best which governs least." - Thomas Paine And this doesn't really sound like a statist: "The instant formal government is abolished, society begins to act. A general association takes place, and common interest produces common security." |

[/ QUOTE ] Kinda. His writings have always struck me as a capital L Libertarian. As the previous post mentioned, he had a huge distaste for government but felt it was necessary, albiet in a minimum form. I'd say "revolutionary" is a far more appropriate term. While that hypocrite, Jefferson, made this quote, it surely wishes it came from Paine's mind: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" |

[ QUOTE ] I love Thomas Paine. A general association takes place, and common interest produces common security." [/ QUOTE ] If you think government is a "necessary evil" you are by definition a statist. If you read "Rights of Man" the essence of liberty and freedom is described to come from universal suffrage. He wrote it at a time when Whig/conservative gov'ts were oppressing the poor, no democracy and an aristocratic ruling class. The book later became the symbol of Chartism which sought to establish a socialist type state with fair representation and I presume proportionate taxation. You could probably find some interesting quotations of his slamming the Jews too which I hope most 2+2'ers disagree with! |
