This will never, ever happen.

He probably is. Garden Grove has a bad history of trying to attract big development as they try and play off their proximity to Disneyland. I give this a 2 in a 100 chance of succeeding.

My understanding is that Indian Tribes would love to get into a spot like Garden Grove with a mostly slots casino. I don't follow this closely but from what I've heard/read they may be looking for some sort of claim to old land inside the LA metro area.

A typical LA area card club can't even be voted on; there's a state moratorium on even putting this sort of thing on the ballot for well into the future (in a post from a few months back someone corrected me on the exact year).

An Indian backed casino will find a different way that doesn't involve voter approval. Hopefully still a long shot but if it gets in it won't be good for poker players. That I'm sure of.

This is in the news again.

500 turn up to protest casino: Little Saigon community leaders protest against proposed resort in Garden Grove.

[ QUOTE ]
GARDEN GROVE – About 500 Vietnamese Americans packed the Community Meeting Center on Tuesday evening, carrying banners protesting the proposed casino resort on Harbor Boulevard in the city-designated resort area.

It was a standing-room-only crowd inside council chambers, and hundreds of others watched the meeting on television as they occupied other rooms at the center holding small signs and large banners that read "No casino in Garden Grove" and "Gambling destroys lives."

At least a dozen people from the audience who spoke during the public-comments section of the meeting said they are opposed to the project because they fear it will "destroy family and cultural values" and bring crime and traffic into the area.

Okay i'm confused. Is there an indian reservation just sitting in the middle of garden grove? There would have to be if they're talking about putting slots in. I've got news for you, if there is an indian reservation sitting there and the tribe wants to put a casino up, a casino is going up. I don't care how many letters mayors of surrounding cities sign or how many protestors show up. Indian land is soverign and casino's make money.

I don't fully understand the status of the land in question, but you guys can't forget just how much power tribes have over their own land.

numbnuts007 - I'm not positive about this, but it is my understanding that the tribe does not have a claim to the land. They are from Santa Monica. So there are still plenty of hurdles they need to cross before this ever has a chance of happening.

According to this, the tribe needs approval from the governor to open a casino off of their reservation. Schwarzenegger is apparently opposed to a casino in Garden Grove.

Often with Indian casinos they pick the site first and then form the tribe.

I'm no expert on the topic, but this is not nearly as straightforward as the City deciding they want it, taking bids and pushing forward. This has been bandied about for several years and, at best, it's a long shot. If you'd like to spend an afternoon reading about the morass of Native American gaming in CA, here's a good reference piece circa 2006.

Research report on Indian Gaming in CA

Note: that's a big PDF; it'll take a minute to download. If anyone wants Part II (other forms of CA gaming), PM me.
