Default What happened to Gus Hansen?

I have heard all kinds of rumors about him losing lots of money in cash games and being a donator in high limit games, then kind of disappearing from the poker scene. Gossip please.

I listened to the recent podcast on cardplayer from Shooting Stars (with play that wrapped up a few days ago).

Gus talked about the rumors related to his poker escapades.

He said he had lost a great deal in the Big Game which he's been playing for about three years for a while, particularly early on. He also said he had many good sessions. He said overall, he's ahead in the game. He said the rumors of his bustoness and bad sessions have a tendency to be highly exaggerated (which seems pretty plausible given the out there way he played in his early TV appearances--he's sort of mythical in some ways). He doesn't play props because he feels it distracts him from the game.

He also said that he lost a ton early on playing online but that now he was ahead overall there as well. He said he'd tried strategies that had worked on 4k-8k and expected them to work there and they did not.

Anyway, that's what Gus said and he doesn't seem defensive or emotional talking about it. Just same old even keel Gus.

My last Vegas trip in November Gus was playing in the Big Game pretty much every day.

From what I've read, it sounds like he's been there a lot lately and also at the big tournaments.

Where did Gus get his original roll? Rumor is he jumped straight into super high stakes games, and his style is super-high variance. Backgammon winnings?

I suggest reading the interview with Gus in Card Player and also thinking about what Barry said about Gus on his site.

Gus has played for a long time (listed as being in his 7th WSOP ME last year) and lived in Santa Cruz for some time playing a lot of poker there.

Barry said Gus moved up limits a lot more quickly then others had, but Barry never said he just jumped into the big game or into really high stakes to start his poker career.

I think the reason Gus Hansen has been out of the spotlight recently is because he realized that you can't keep winning tournaments by calling all ins with 96o.
