Group Job Interview
I got the call for a group job interview with my Students' Union. Non-demanding 10h/week position. I was asked to pick either Wednesday or Saturday for the interview, and chose Saturday.
The room being used is attached to a student gathering area, and openly visible behind glass. My friend was around when the Wednesday interview went down. Here's what he saw from the outside. - Candidates gather at the centre of the room, and are soon broken into four groups. - Within each group, or at least within the one closest to him, the interviewer uses a large drawing, or a maybe large sheet with illustrations, which she lays on the table and points to as she converses with the candidates. - Most people wave their hands demonstratively as they talk. - Groups frequently rotate around the room or swap members. Often all of the attention in the room gets directed to one group's conversation. - At certain points, everybody gathers in one corner, looking intently at something. Something involving a table, a balloon, and some string. Small groups do activities with these materials and the rest applaud. So what exactly am I in for? Is this kind of crap standard for group interviews? |

Re: Group Job Interview
Doesn't sound like much of an interview.

Re: Group Job Interview
I've never heard of a "group interview." Are you sure it's not just an orientation of sorts? If it's the student union, maybe they just have to give the job to whoever applies?

Re: Group Job Interview
Group interview means its some crap job that a monkey could do, so this is basically orientation/training, but since they call it an interview, then they don't have to pay you anything and it lets them say no if too many people show up or if you are a wackjob.

Re: Group Job Interview
ive been to one group interview before. it was a horrid experience and once it was over, i immediately left knowing i didnt want the job.
the two people running the interview were looking only for personality and had no interest in skill sets. one of the questions was "if you were a cookie, what kind of cookie would you be and why?" the group of 20 of us went around and answered the question to the group. im wincing as i write this remembering the experience. that was the dumbest interview question by a landslide that ive ever been asked. in addition to personality, what you describe as some activity they may be looking at how you work w/ others and your leadership skills. |
