Re: Why do ambulances/cops/firemen do this?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] This was written about in the NY Times, 6/16/07. "An Earsplitting Symphony With the Maestro in Blue." Partially it's to get the attention of drivers. It's also partially so that other emergency vehicles can hear each other when they have their sirens on. [/ QUOTE ] A serious reply. Finally. Thank you. -OP [/ QUOTE ] wait, are you serious? you didn't know what the sirens were for? |

While a silly question, I found the reasoning kind of interesting. I'm suitably entertained. |

Re: Why do ambulances/cops/firemen do this?
When I was an EMT we learned to use all 3 different sirens at an intersection because some drivers may hear 1 siren but not another with all the other background noise. It also can come up in court if a car hits the ambulance and they claim they never heard a siren.

Re: Why do ambulances/cops/firemen do this?
[ QUOTE ]
It seems to me that pretty much every time these guys need to use their sirens, they never just flip it on. Instead of the bwee-oooh-eeeh-oooh-eeeh-oooh that the sirens are designed to make, they (especially cops) keep flipping it on and off making it go bwee...bwee...bwee-oooh...bwee. Somebody tell me there's a reason for this and that they're not just being obnoxious. I'm down with EMT and firemen, but I think cops are already obnoxious enough without this. [/ QUOTE ] I'm an EMT in Virginia Beach. We do this at the Oceanfront. There are a 1,000+ tourists on the sidewalks, and they don't need us to come through and make them deaf. Trust me, it is effective to let them know we are there, but doesn't make their ears bleed. Hope this helps. |
