The sole remaining player got the chips. I don't remember if he put in chips to call the raise. I do remember he said to the floor when he got to the table something like "you ARE going to abide by the rules, aren't you?" meaning he knew he had the worst hand and was only going to win the pot on a technicality.

I don't like this ruling at all. Seems a much better ruling is to give the cards back to the raiser and continue the play of the hand.

I hate rules that are not the same for lower and upper limit games but I think in a low limit game where players are LEARNING the game the rules should be bent now and then.
But a full explanation needs to be made. As for ROBERTS RULES, is there a house that teaches this to the floor? Is there a house that even has a copy in the room? And who decided Roberts was THE rules of poker? Bob? |

I would say at least 90% of casino rule books are based on one of these two. |

Not sure who decided RR was THE rules. However, I've seen many rulebooks from different rooms, and RR are without a doubt the best and most complete. There is at least one room in town that has a copy cuz I put it there. If I were starting a room I'd start with RR and modify them to suit my specific situation.

This same thing happened to me at the Venetian - I called an ep raise (1/2 NL game), everyone else folded, initial ep raiser thought everyone had folded to him, and mucked his hand. Dealer collects his cards and starts pushing him the pot ... to which I say, 'I still have cards.'
Floor comes over, awards me the pot because I'm the only one with cards left in front of me. I tip for the ep raiser's next few drinks ... And we all lived happily ever after. |
