Ubin, I would guess a lot of the vote had to do with the fact that there are just a bunch of crappy dealers there who wouldn’t make much more anyway. A couple years ago I had a couple dealers I worked with in Vegas tell me that they wished we pooled tips and what I thought. I told them it was a horrible idea and threw out some numbers about how much less we would probably make. Both of these guys were very poor dealers and said that they wouldn’t really take much of a pay cut. I was very surprised by this; I don’t think many people realize (I didn’t) how much of a pay gap there is between a good and a bad dealer even within the same room.

I would guess that there are a lot of dealers at Foxwoods that just suck and will continue to do so whether the tips are pooled or not. So, in their case, it actually kind of makes sense to vote to keep things how they are. The ones that get screwed are the good dealers (and players). Unfortunately, it looks like the good dealers are outnumbered there.

According to the Wizard of Odds, casino dealers may generally keep for themselves non-cash gifts from players worth less than $100, even though they must pool their cash tips.

The source he cites is the Venetian (this regards table games; their poker dealers keep their own cash tips, too). Foxwoods, of course, may have a different policy, but you might want to see if you can give your favorite dealer a gift certificate or some PawSox tickets.

Shouldn't be that surprising. I usually get out 16-20 hands a down, depending on the game. I see dealers who get out about 2/3 of this, if that. When I push these dealers, sometimes as I'm pitching the very first hand, I get comments such as, "wow, we're actually going to get more than three hands?" Because of this, I'm pretty sure my tip rate is more than just the straight 50% based on hand quantitites, which is already rather significant.

pooling tips is a sign of a crappy casino

[/ QUOTE ]Think of playing at Foxwoods is like eating in a restaurant in Europe, good or bad service, tip is included.

I used to think all of the fw regulars were such [censored] because of how they acted to the dealers but seriously it is UNBELIEVABLE how bad and rude lots of the dealers are (there are plenty of very good, friendly dealers at foxwoods - but just way too many).

some frustrating experiences recently:

- a player bets the river in a HUGE pot (25+bb), one fold, and there is one guy left thinking about calling. As he's thinking the next dealer comes in for the push and starts chatting up our current dealer about trying to figure out if their table order or whatever is right.

At some point HE TURNS HIS BACK ON THE TABLE, and I'm sitting there totally stunned that this is going on. The other player folds and the bettor flips aces face up in front of him. The dealer still has his back turned talking to the other dealer. Aces asks him if he can please continue the conversation after the hand (he said it politely, but with tension in his voice). dealer turns around and is totally lost - he sees the aces face up and asks the other player what his hand is (his cards are face down a few inches in front of him - he's in the five seat so there's not a ton of room with the mountain of chips out there - but obv they haven't been pulled into the muck). Aces gets a little more agitated and tells him that he had bet, and asks him if he sees a call. So as he's pushing the pot guy with aces gives a mini lecture about how inappropriate it is to turn your back on the table in the middle of a hand, especially in a huge pot. he was definitely tense and pissed but no where near out of line. This dealer and the pushing dealer start YELLING at him, threatening to call the floor, etc. aces was on the verge of exploding and picked up and left out of frustration.

- I'm sitting in the three seat and as the dealer is pitching I think I see four heart pips flash for the four seat's card, and tell the dealer that he flashed a ten or nine of hearts. The dealer peeks at the card, doesn't say anything, and keeps dealing. four seat raises and I mention that I'm shocked that I saw the cards wrong and he flashes me the ten diamonds. after the hand I ask the dealer if he thinks he should have maybe exposed the ten of diamonds and he looks at me for a second, and shrugs.

- I raised and for like the fifth time the dealer didn't announce it, and I saw someone after me try to limp and I tell the dealer I raised. he snaps at me, very rudely, that I have to announce my raises.

- multiway pot and one player is all in for half a bet. as the dealer is scooping ALL the chips into the main pot, about three players quickly say that there's a side pot. dealer starts yelling "I KNOW, I'M PULLING ALL THE BETS IN FIRST, I'M THE CAPTAIN OF THIS TABLE".

stuff like this happens pretty much regularly to the point where nothing really surprises me anymore.

I've played at tables where the dealer is asking players at the table what the ruling is for certain situations. I've had a dealer ask at showdown if one of the players had a straight (who was initially going to muck his hand). He flipped over his hand bc he wasn't sure, and sure enough he had the 8 high straight.

Guy who was going to win that pot calls floor and insanity ensues. Tons of other ridiculous stuff, but the ones that are great are far and few between, agreed.
