Should I steal this money?
I am completely broke, having as usual lost this week's wages playing online poker. I spent my last £1.50 ($3) on food for Saturday-Monday. I have nothing in the cupboards except a packet of pasta (no butter, oil, garlic, sauce etc). I haven't eaten in 24 hours.
I am currently in an ongoing temporary position as a legal secretary; I've been at the firm since February. A woman just left on Friday, and from today I'm doing her role, with the option of applying for the permament post if I want to. Looking in the departed lady's drawers, I found a half-packet of biscuits and three small chocolates, which I eat without thought. I also found three sealed envelopes containing small change: £2.50 in five pence pieces, £1.70 in one pence pieces, and £2.30 in two pence pieces. The totals are written on the outsides of the envelopes. So in total there's £6.50 / $13. Can I take this money to buy myself the food to live on until payday on Friday? Yes, it would be theft. But she has left the firm and not taken this money with her, so why not? My only worry would be if she came back to say hello to her former colleagues, and remembered / asked about it, but that doesn't seem likely. If you were starving - albeit through your own fault - would you take it? Or would you try to borrow money from a friend instead? |

Re: Should I steal this money?
Wow, what a stupid story. Take this to BBV where they will rail on you because of the low amount of money involved.
Oh, and take the money and play some poker, since that's been going well. |

Re: Should I steal this money?
It's only a small amount of money, but you should never be dishonest or unethical at your job (especially a job you obviously need). It's not worth the risk. Ask friends or family for a loan, stop being such a stupid degen gambler, and get your life back on track.

Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday?

Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday? [/ QUOTE ] Probably because he'll lose it playing poker thinking he can make some money and pay it back. Stop being a degenerate and go to gamblers anonymous. to quote NT from the locked sober thread "OOT is not a support group". But it seems like you need one. |

Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, that seems like a good idea. I would have to get the bank to give it to me in 1ps, 2ps, 5ps though, and in the unlikely event the departed woman came back she'd see I'd opened the envelopes. I think though it is VERY VERY unlikely she will come back - I mean stuff people leave in their desks when they quit a job tends to be stuff they don't care about or expect to see again, right. Oh I've been to GA in the past, we didn't get on. I had no honest desire to quit. I've also written 10,000 words about being a degenerate in my thread in the Psychology section... |

Re: Should I steal this money?
Never steal anything small. You are risking your career for chump change. Beg on the street until you get enough money for a egenerate: tattoo. Then buy a copy of George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Then Doschevsky's the Gambler.
Some people are not cut out for poker and you are one of them. You are a great poster and you can still post. |
