This question is open-ended and not loaded to any particular reason. Just curious as to people's opinion.

Both lose when other options are available. Would you rather be all-in heads up or against a bunch of other people?
^edit: my bad attempt at a poker analogy^ |

i think it is becuase you need over 50% to get a law passed. so like if there was more than 2 partys alot of bills would not get passed. IF there was more than 2 then 2 of the partys would constantly ally to get bills passed. ect.
that is just my theory |

It's the inevitable result of the voting system.
When you vote and a president gets elected, that's it. He's the man. If you voted for him, you got more than you were entitled to. If you voted for someone else, you are getting nothing, nada, bupkis for your vote. It puts smaller parties in positions where, if they want to survive at all, they must compromise and consolidate. For example, if there were three parties, one with 40% support and two with 30% support, come election day the big 40% guy is going to win all the power. The only thing left to do is to compromise and combine forces and voting bases. The two-party system, as I see it, is inevitable because of the nature of competition in the system. |

as a side note, the Democratic Republic is a completely stupid system. Its nature causes the correct strategy for someone or a some party who wants to maintain influence appeal to the lowest common denominator, and KEEP THEM as the lowest common denominator.

-Churchil I may have gotten the wording wrong. |
