I want to learn guitar, help me choose a starter
I'm sure there are some 2p2'ers out there who play guitar and can give me some advice. I'd like to start learning to play, but have no clue what to get. Since I'm just starting, I'm certainly not looking to spend 1k on guitar. I've got a couple links to some auctions below, let me know if you guys think any of these would be decent to learn on (want to play hard rock/metal songs if that matters). Also, if you have any suggestions that I haven't listed, let me know. Thx
Epiphone LP 2 squier strat Squier 51 Ibanez GRX20 Wouldn't necessarily buy it off of ebay. |

I'd pass on the squires, especially if your playing hard rock/metal.
can you be a little more specific on how much your looking to spend? maybe I can provide some better advice then. |

Re: I want to learn guitar, help me choose a starter
around $200ish. Don't really want to go above that, since at this point, I can't play a 1k$ guitar, just as well as I can't play a $200 guitar. I should also probably clarify, the kind of stuff I would want to play would probably be considered more classic/hard rock. Thanks.
p.s. is there something wrong w/ the squire's? |

Don't learn on an electric. Nothing wrong with squires but play one before you buy it. Some play great and some are crap. Any cheap acoustic from a major brand is fine, but I would still recommend playing a cheap guitar before buying one i.e. a catalog order type of thing.

Re: I want to learn guitar, help me choose a starter
I just think they are very low quality guitars even for their price range. and when you originally said hard rock/metal, they aren't really suited for that. they are more of a country/blues guitar. for classic rock it'd be fine though.
Of the four you put up, I'd probably go w/ the Epiphone. $They are pretty good for their price range. If you ever want to spend a little more, check out www.carvin.com they are very nice guitars, and much cheaper because they sell direct from the factory, so no store mark-ups. They have some very nice models in the $500-$600 range. |

Re: I want to learn guitar, help me choose a starter
I'm not a big guitar guy myself, but when my brother was looking a lot of people suggested the mexican-standard fender stratocasters.
I think they're around $300 or so and sound quite good compared to others. If you decide to go acoustic, I listened to quite a few and settled on a Yamaha. It's been sitting in my room now for a year and looking quite lonely. I swore I wasn't gonna be one of "those guys". Oh well. |

[/ QUOTE ] Actually electrics are easier to play, but making the transition from electric to acoustic is much tougher than making the transition the other way. |
