Re: Yankees win bid on Igawa, 25 Mil
Oh goodie, this 'posting' system will ensure that only the richest teams get a crack at the best Japanese talent... do the Yankees and Red Sox even need a farm system anymore?

[/ QUOTE ] posting does scru over small markets, but won't obviously be nearly enough to build a team...especially since these guys are unproven here... |

Re: Yankees win bid on Igawa, 25 Mil
yeah, seems more like an expensive gamble with a payout that could probably be had with another, cheaper player. Potential revenue boosts help though.

Potential revenue boosts help though. [/ QUOTE ] it depends. The Yankees probably gained something w/ Matsui - they will gain much less with their 2nd Japanese player. economists basically say the Red Sox will gain JA related revenues of about $3-$4m per year if they sign Mats. now if they they make the Word Series b/c of him, that's a different story. They are gambling that he will help them win baseball games in the playoffs, not that he will bring in all kinds of ancillary revenues. |

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh Oh well at least we got Dellucci. I find it hilarious that Dellucci + Michaels = Lee in LF for much much less. |

If the Red Sox make the playoffs due to Matsuzaka then the posting fee is effectively $35M or so, and if they make the World Series, it's even less. And that's before factoring in Japanese revenues (shouldn't be too much like Seattle due to location and prior demand for tickets), marketing, and further negotiation rights and goodwill in the emerging Asian baseball markets. |

I don't understand, why is this allowed to go on? Why don't these players have to enter the draft like everyone else?

These Japanese pitchers are professionals and do not qualify. 2.) They are still under contract with their Japanese league teams and therefore would not be allowed to become major leaguers by their teams unless the team is compensated in some way and the bidding system allows them to get the greatest compensation. |

Re: Yankees win bid on Igawa, 25 Mil
Bobby Valentine says he's good, but not great, that he was better 3-4 years ago. He's now 27 I believe. Throws about 90 and has a good curve.
Doesn't appear he'd be a star at the MLB level. |
