John O'Brien.

Leaving Las Vegas was a good book.

Stripper Lessons is one of my all-time favorites (many, many people hate this book - I can't really put my finger on why I love it so much)

Most of Assault on Tony's is great. His sister finished this book after his suicide.

He has one other manuscript that has not been published that I'm aware of. I'm looking foward to it being published someday.

E.A. Poe. Had a wonderful middle school English teacher who is positively hooked on Poe. She issued us a complete works book of his, and I read it cover to cover.

EDIT: I've read most of Hemingway's and Shakespeare's stuff too.

Anne McCaffrey (or most everything)
George RR. Martin
David Gemmel

A few others who only published 1 or 2 books.

I tried reading one of Irving's books. "The Hotel New Hampshire." I had to quit halfway through. I've had a few friends who are obsessed with his stuff, though.

Matt Christopher. At least I think that's his name. The guy who wrote all the great sports books, like "The Kid who only hit homeruns." I'm pretty sure I read every single one of those.

And Bill Waterson.

John Grisham - It helps that he's from my home town.

[ QUOTE ]
Cormac McCarthy is one of my favorites as well. His latest novel though is not up to the standard of Blood Meridian or Suttree. Someone made the comment on the Cormac McCarthy forum that he is no longer in the business of writing masterpieces. Perhaps a bit harsh but hard to argue with.

A new play of his was recently performed in Chicago. The audience's reaction was largely favorable. He has another book coming out in a couple of months, this one science fiction. Apparently it's the story of two travellers, one young one old, after some sort of cataclysm.

I read and loved Blood Meridian recently. I'm reading Suttree now. What do you suggest I go for next?
