Irritating tipping question (chip denominations...?)
Thirty minutes of search revealed no answers, so here goes...
I've never played above $4/8 live in the US before. I'm off to Vegas next week and plan to play $10/20 - $30/60. In the little games you have piles of one dollar chips in front of you so finding a dollar to tip a dealer/waitress/other is easy. What chip denominations are used in mid-limit games? If it's all 5s and up, what's done for tips? You crazy Americans don't have an equivalent of our convenient one-pound coins and I don't think fumbling with paper money would be a good plan. Ta, Guy. |

Re: Irritating tipping question (chip denominations...?)
You'll end up having smaller chips on the table from rake/time payments. If not, you can get the dealer to "chop" a chip out of the pot for you--just watch the cranky octogenarians at your table to learn the motion to ask for the dealer to do it.
A few years ago, there was an AC regular who would always buy a stack of white from the cage before he sat down to use for tips and to make change when running time pots. If you're really worried about not having enough $1 chips, just do that. scrub |

Re: Irritating tipping question (chip denominations...?)
If there's a rake there are going to be $1 chips in the pots. If there's a time charge and no white chips in play, buy some at the cage, or when you win a pot, toss a chip and ask to have it chopped, then tip $1.

Just give the dealer a regular old red or green chip like everyone else does.

nh. I wish that more parking meters on the East Coast would take these! I've been known to go to the bank and ask for a roll of 20. But like every rare good idea to come from the federal goverment, there's no impetus for implementation. |

So are those coins in common use? They're pretty.

Re: Irritating tipping question (chip denominations...?)
they are pretty. Unfortunately, they aren't in common use. Someone came up with the bright idea to make them almost exactly the size of a quarter (.25 dollars USD), so people (rightly, IMO) hate them, because it's easy to confuse them with a quarter. Plus, if you tipped a waitress with them, they'd probably think it was a quarter and give you attitude.
