Re: Mom Finds Drug Stash-Trip Report
[ QUOTE ]
My mom explains that my grandfather was a pretty bad alcoholic and she thinks that I may genetically have an addictive personality. [/ QUOTE ] If you have the genetic predisposition, be very careful. Weed can be habit-forming. (I know all the smokers here will dispute that weed is addictive, but it makes sense to be careful.) I think you handled the situation fine. |

Re: Mom Finds Drug Stash-Trip Report
This is no different from your mom finding out that you make money playing poker and telling you to see a psychologist about a gambling addiction.

The fact that she believed you about the coke being for a friend means that your mom trusts you much more than most.

Re: Mom Finds Drug Stash-Trip Report
You get an A for damage control- it could've been MUCH worse and your mom actually sounds relatively cool about it since she sounds more concerned than preachy. Then again, I wasn't there for the conversation.
However, I believe she's incorrect regarding the link between your grandfather's alcoholism and some generalized concept of "addictive personality." Science is still trying to figure out just how much of a predisposition toward alcoholism is inherited, and there definitely is evidence of this. However, alot of this is likely alcohol-specific (ie, alcoholics might possess an ability to process alcohol faster, can seemingly function better while drunk, etc). This of course, wouldn't translate into a higher than normal risk for addiction to other stuff (weed, coke, caffeine, hookers, whatever). Also, she'd have a better case if your father or her were an alcoholic. But again, that's very likely to be alcohol specific. As for seeing a psychologist, from her point of view she should realize she's throwing her money away if you don't want to be there. You really wouldn't get anything out of conseling if you 1) Are going against your will and 2) Don't think you have a problem. Of course, I'm taking your word for it that both of these are true, so it's a waste on her part. But if it gets her off your back and makes her happy, just go along with it. |
