Default Photography: Help me buy a camera

I travel a lot, especially for the next 7 months or so and seem to find myself in places where I wish I had a nice camera to take quality pictures. I know nothing about photography, camera's or prices. Here's what I do know:

- I want to take super awesome pictures.

- Assume price doesn't matter, but I do want to get a great camera for a good price.

Here's what you need to help me with:

- Tell me what camera's I need to look at.

- Tell me why, explain to me what makes an awesome camera.

- Give price ranges of your listed camera's.

- If you have links that would be nice.

- Any other information that you think I should know b/c I am a just a nerb that wants awesome pictures.

Thank you

~td

Are you leaning to digital or film?

Which is better? Which takes better shots, if one does at all? Which is more difficult/easier to handle/develop etc.?

Sounds like you want a point n' shoot. SLR's have a learning curve that, unless you wish to 'get into' photography long-term, is too steep.

Look into a Canon Powershot S3 IS or a Canon Powershot A700 , the S3 being on the high-end and the A700 being easier to use and more compact.

go digital SLR like this one. canon is good but i'd go nikon. probably steer toward one of those two and look at their mid to high end digital SLR's. you won't be disappointed. if you want a nice film SLR you can check ebay or a photo store - newer isn't necessarily better with film cameras. there are cameras made fifty years ago that still take great shots - leica or hasselblaad are both great if you go this route. digital is a better investment if you aren't way heavy in to photography. you'll save money on film in the long run and you'll create less trash which we treehuggers appreciate.
