Is this rake fair? (5%, max 7,50)
Disclaimer: All the amounts are actually euros which is worth about 1,35 the dollar and the location is the Netherlands, so alternatives are limited.
I used to think the home game I played at had a decent rake, but I'm starting to question it. For reference, the only 'legal' place to play here is the casino, which has a 5%, max $10 rake at 1/2 NL. The home game used to be rake free but a few months ago he started raking because he has to clean up and I guess he is looking for a small profit. The location is a chinese restaurant after hours, drinks are $1 and he rarely provides snacks (though when he does it's usually fried eggrolls or chicken finger-type stuff). There also used to be huge fish there but lately they have either been educated by him or told not to come anymore, because they were usually his friends and/or family and they were donating HARD (I agree he had to say something). The game is still good, and has a good friendly atmosphere but definitely not a game with lots of fish (we usually play 6 handed 1 table). I think he rakes around $250 in a night. We usually play around 8 hours. This is more if there is lots of action and less if there is less obv. So basically I'm paying him $50 to play because one nit is never in any hands and so the five of us are paying $250. The game is 0,50/0,50 NL with $200 max buy-in. Usually plays a bit bigger than a 0,50/1 NL game. Thoughts? |

I' say the 5% is fair, but the $10 max is extreme. I'd say a $6-7 max. He shouldn't be making $250 a night just to host a .50/.50 NL game

It's perfectly fair..... to the greedy host
(yowch! I'd love to get paid for ANY of my work, much less a windfall like that...) |

Re: Is this rake fair? (5%, max 7,50)
Sorry if it was unclear, the rake is 5% with a $7,50 cap. The $10 cap is at the casino, which is the only alternative.
I'm thinking of suggesting 5% with a $5 cap. Seems like a decent 'compromise', right? Also, if we bug him about it he will make something to eat, but usually nobody says anything. |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm confused, do you have a table where you live (like your kitchen table)? Just start your own game with a 5%/$5 max structure and tell everyone to play there. Any rake is fair if no one else is willing to go through the trouble of hosting a similar game with a lower rake. |

Re: Is this rake fair? (5%, max 7,50)
Unless this guy is providing you some pretty serious food, cocktails, and service, this seems like a ridiculously high rake to me.
Look at it this way: He's probably spending at MOST $50 to host this game. If he's a decent fellow, he'd charge no rake but require a $5 sit-down fee, or simply eat the cost and ask for donations. There is very little excuse for a rake at a home game. |
