Default ivey, benyamine etc buying in for 16k?

Sometimes will see them sit at 200/400 nl/plo with 40k but often ivey will sit with 16k? Anyone have any strategical insight as to why this may be? Presumably theyre not conceding that they are at a skill disadvantage (and thereby needing to shortstack to profit) and bankroll is evidently no problem so this strategy seems peculiar?

Anyone have any ideas as to why they may do this, particularly when they are used to playing bigger games live and known for wanting to gamble - Would seem logical that Ivey would want the games online to play as big as possible, yet often buys in short?

Probably so if they get a good starting hand it's easier to get all their money in the middle while they are ahead.

Ivey often mentions (in interviews) that he never goes into a game with a strategy, he just tries to first get the right "feel" of the game before the real action begins...

He mentioned that for live play of course, but I would guess he does a similar thing online, so buying in for 40BBs would make sense...
However, he mostly sees familiar "faces" online so he should know everyones game, so I question the point of it...

I buy in for 40bb in NL games and the reason is from something I read in Greensteins book on reasons to buy-in short.

"You probably play better when you are ahead and worse when you are stuck. Even if you won't admit that, you would agree that your opponents play better when they are ahead and worse when they are stuck. Therefore, you will have money in front of you when you should, and be short of money when your opponents are at their best."

Greenstein also showed he practices what he preaches when he bought in short during HSP.
