so, one way fares are generally way more expensive than round trip, and i guess it's understandable in a way. but what's stopping people from just booking round trip and not getting on the return flight? is there some kind of penatly? is it against any rules?

one way fares are cheaper than 2 way fares. I know if you book a RT and don't get on the first flight, the second one is cancelled.

One way are individually cheaper than a RT but if you bought 2 one ways it would cost more than 1 RT flight.

Daryn, there is no penalty, I booked a round trip to miami, with a stopover in atlanta. At the last minute I decided ot have the car I was supposed to pick up in miami shipped to atlanta, and didnt even get on the 2nd leg of the 1st trip. People miss flights all the time, duh.

one way fares are NOT cheaper than round trip fares. everything i've ever seen has them at more than double the cost of a round trip flight. hence my question about is there some penalty for missing a leg. obviously people miss flights all the time, but why would people ever book one way flights?

We are talking about the same flight, same dates - just trying to book a single vs. booking a return, right? |

daryn,
You must not fly Southwest. On Southwest and a growing number of airlines, every leg of a trip is priced as a one-way ticket. |

It is routinely cheaper to book roundtrip than one way to/from Europe for some unknown (to me) reason. |
