5CD: HH-made my hand. raise or try for overcall?
Button is solid regular, SB is unknown, seems fishy
Raise him, or call to get overcaller + minimise damage when i'm not best? Limit 5 Card Draw ($1/$2) (converter) SB ($36.50), Seat 4 Hero ($50.70), Seat 5 UTG ($98.90), Seat 6 CO ($14.15), Seat 1 Button ($89.80), Seat 3 SB posts $0.50. Hero posts $1. Hero is BB with [8s Qc 7d Tc 9c] "open ender. pot odds baby!" Round 1: (1.50 SB) UTG folds. CO folds. Button raises. SB calls. Hero calls. SB takes 2. Hero discards Qc . Button takes 1. Hero has [8s Jd 7d Tc 9c] "boom! headshot!" Round 2: (3.00 BB) SB bets. Hero calls. Button calls. Pot: (6.00 BB - $12) Results: (in white) Pot: $12, (including rake: $1) SB shows [ 6H,AH,5S,QH,AS ] Hero shows [ 8S,JD,7D,10C,9C ] Button mucks cards [ KS,KH,QD,4C,4S ] Note that if i get no overcall (-$2), i save 60cents in rake. So i'm not losing a full bet if it dont work. ...so, i smoothcall, and get my overcall. Not sure i like it though, in hindsight, cause i'm positive i beat SB, and i'm 95% sure he instacalls. he seems that kind of player. what say you? |

Re: 5CD: HH-made my hand. raise or try for overcall?
Personally, I go for the overcall.
Partly for the reason you gave; the attractive pot odds will make the button overcall too many times than is worth it. If you raise SB, I don't see him calling, I know I wouldn't (you're raising a 2card draw), but you never know. I think in the long run, the overcalls make more; you give away your hand when you raise. I've had up to THREE people overcall (I nailed my draw in the BB, the SB bets, just like you.. and had all 3card draws behind.. beautiful ) Edit, thinking about it more.. if you Raise, you might get button to fold KKs-up, maybe even trips. However, by just calling, button might just put you on a scared two pair and may end up raising for you and you get more bets. |

And what if you raise and then get TWO callers?

[/ QUOTE ] Personally, I wouldn't.. if you did, and it was capped, you'd have to call due to pot odds--for the off chance that some moron isn't capping with just his trip Aces cause he can't believe he got outdrawn--yet the (vast?) majority of the time, your straight's no good. Also, personally, I know that I tend to go the more cautious route. Times I deviate from that, I think, "dang, that was stupid"... like after I Raised, was ReRaised, and I three-bet (like pot bet) and the guy called, then drew 3. I had a full-house. He raised my bet post, I shoved....? Being that it's 98-1 for him to catch a FH or better, I didn't believe his raise post represented a hand that beat me, but, it did. And how often am I going to be called by a lesser hand to make that move profitable? I don't feel enough. (My thought at the time was that he was a maniac and might call the overbet with trips.) |

Re: 5CD: HH-made my hand. raise or try for overcall?
i dont mind fold pre-draw largely because you will have dramas getting paid post draw when you hit
i think its auto to play for the overcall - this would change if i thought that the SB could easily have 3 of a kind pre-draw or if the button had drawn 3 stripsqueez - chickenhawk |

"BOHICA" ?? [/ QUOTE ] heh, sorry, thats an acronym from the real old-school RGP days "Bend Over, Here It Comes Again!" i.e. I had nut flush on the turn, and was jamming the pot. The river came to pair the board...and i was like bohica, the donk outdrew me again! EDIT: so in the context of my post, i mean, if i flat call, and insted of overcalling, the button raises...it could be that he is getting uppity on aces-up or trips...but i'd be afraid he drew to a boat. |
