Stars $11x180, 99 on Button Facing EP Raise
PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t100 (8 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums)
MP2 (t145) CO (t5532) Hero (t3495) SB (t3757) BB (t3220) UTG (t1410) UTG+1 (t2875) MP1 (t1314) Preflop: Hero is Button with 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. 1 fold, UTG+1 raises to t300, 1 fold, MP2 calls t145 (All-In), 1 fold, Hero....? No solid read on UTG+1 but he hasn't done anything obviously out of line. Call with position and see a flop or stick them in there now...? I suppose folding is an option as well. |

I call here due to it being protected pot. [/ QUOTE ] UTG+1 didn't know it was a protected pot when he raised, so I don't believe his raise is as strong as it would be if the other player was already committted before he stuck his raise in. Or am I misunderstanding how I should be thinking about this? |

protected pot has to do with postflop play.

protected pot has to do with postflop play. [/ QUOTE ] Can you elaborate further? I think if the shorty was almost all-in in the blinds and this guy comes out betting from early position it shows a lot of strength. However, I'm not sure how shorty coming in after the EP raise affects this hand. |

shaun,
i have no idea what you're talking about either. i mean, of course it's a call, but that's because stacks/positions are weird for 3-betting here. |

Wow, this is a very common term for cash games. Protected pot is one where there is little to no sidepot. It is considered protected due to the all in person as people tend to be a lot more honest since it's a whole lot less +EV to bluff in spots like this.

Re: Stars $11x180, 99 on Button Facing EP Raise
The protected pot concept should be pretty easy to explain.
Big blind is t400, 10 handed Hero: t70 000 SB: t1600 BB: t160 000 Preflop:Hero is button with 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7 folds, Hero raises to t1600, SB calls all-in t1400, BB calls t1200. Flop: (Pot is t4800) 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (3 players, one all-in) BB bets t3500 The idea here, is that the BB has to have a pretty strong hand to bet, and never a bluff. This is because due to the SB being all-in, he has 0 FE, and will always have to show down his hand. The hand in OP is the same concept, but less extreme of an example. |

Re: Stars $11x180, 99 on Button Facing EP Raise
Yep, a call is really good here, especially late in a tourney, and if the utg player checks it down to an all in player.
This happens heaps on the bubble. Basically, you gang up on the short stack, by checking your own hands. However, because you are a slimy bastard (as am i on the green felt!), you can take the free cards, hopefully get your set, and then bet. |
