I just saw this on the front page and started at post 1. Forty seconds later, there's a post by Elaine. Two minutes later, I am re-oriented with reality, but there will be aftershocks.

Mine costs 30, I give 35--I feel like this may be a little cheap. To supplement I gave a Christmas type bonus.

Well I don't feel too bad now. Per the suggestions in my previous thread I found the gayest sounding salon I could, Glitterati. Cost was $28 and I paid $40, but I always overtip. Haircut is great.

$5 is absurd.

I wouldnt have tipped her a dime, and told her: I hear enough women bitching all day, and I didnt need to have another 15minutes of my life filled with estrogen laced griping.

The fact that she's actually hustling you for the full five makes her pretty bitchy. I'd give her one dollar in that case.

My haircuts cost $12 and I usually give a $2 tip if they did a good job. If they did something extraordinary I might give $3. I usually get my cut from who I think is the owner of the place and if he is he is keeping the whole price of the haircut anyway.

In the case of the girl assuming you were going to give her $5 and acting so as to embarrass you, I would have given her nothing with a big smile and a thank you for the haircut.

$10+5 - but the chick that cuts my hair is hot and gives a great head rub.

She should have handed back five singles. Anyone who acts surprised that I want change gets no tip.

That being said, this situation becomes much easier if you say:

"Can I get three back?"

OR

"Keep two."

EDIT -- Haha, old thread that I already responded to. I guess I'm in a better mood today.

Why don't you guys use your credit card if you don't have the exact amount you want to give her? It's easy, you can write whatever amount you want to give her. This avoids any awkwardness if you want to give a $4 tip on a $15 hair cut. I used this method today when I only had twenties.

I tipped $6. I had LONG hair and it took her a while to cut it. She did an amazing job and really took her time to make sure EVERYTHING was perfect. She might have had OCD or something, but I love it.... she did things I've never seen anyone else do. I plan on going back to her, so a bigger tip than usual should ensure a great hair-cut next time. Hmm... I think I actually believe in Karma when it comes to stylists.
