Apparently Steve Perry of Journey was given the ending in exchange for using "Don't Stop Believing".

If they were gonna leave stuff up to the imagination they they might as well have rolled the credits at the beggining of the episode and let us imagine the whole thing. I dont think the ending was brilliant I think it was an easy way out. And yes we know in life everything is not tied in w knot, but a tv show is there to tell a story from start to finish.

I read this on the NJ.com Sopranos forum from poster "yanks08." It's a very interesting theory:

"Tony falls asleep last week in a barren room. No sheets on bed, no alrms clock, nothing. When he apparently wakes up, there are sheets on bed, a mirror, an alarm clock with music going off. None of that was in the end of last week's show. Tony dreams the whole last episode. A.J getting settled, Phil going down and agent harris cheering for him, Meadow becoming a lawyer and getting married. In the end, he sees himself sitting at the table. He is dreaming of having dinner with his family. Its ends when tony wakes up from his great dream. When A.J. says during the episode, "you are all living in a dream", that is a clue. sheets on bed, A.J's comment, and tony seeing himself at the end are all clues that the show really ended last week. This weeks episode was all a dream."

verry interesting, if true. him going to sleep at the end of last episode was very important and i suspected they might pull something like this.

however there's also no indication that him waking up at the beginning of the episode is from the previous night, either.

WTF at this only being the 4th rated Sopranos episode ever. How is that even possible?

This implies that the penultimate episode ended 6-8 hours before the start of the last episode. There's nothing to indicate this. I'm not even sure there's anything to indicate it's the same room, although it probably is. Seemed pretty non-descript to me in both episodes. Providing it is the same room, there's nothing to say this stuff wasn't put in there between the end of the second-to-last episode and the finale.

After watching the episode for the 3rd time I realized 2 things.

1. The entire episode gets better every time I watch it, and even moreso the ending. The first time I was like "WTF just happened". The second time I was like "heh, wow". And the third I was just pretty blown away. Almost perfect the more I think about it.
2. I listen to Don't Stop Believing a lot, but now I'm going to associate it with the Sopranos final scene forever. I listened to it today and it already conjures up nostalgic emotions.

I'm still going to remember it as a really crappy song, and a funny scene on the Family Guy.

Hater in the house!

And to the blog about this ep being a dream, that's a super reach. Carmella even comments about all the mail when they move back to their home, so it's obvious a good deal of time has elapsed between the two episodes. Certainly enough time to find some blankets and an alarm for Tony.
