It seems a shame to waste all this groundless speculation.

Isn't there someplace we could go to place bets on where he'll end up?

If you want to continue trolling around, hijacking threads, and annoying people you can do it without me. I know you were upset I called you out on the inappropriate use of the word "rape" a couple of days ago. Is that why you are doing this? Are you pissed that I have now "raped" you repeatedly?

Happy Halloween.

Or you could ignore me. I'm sure I'll be crying over that one.

After the 2003 season, the Red Sox and Rangers had a deal in place which would have sent ARod to the Sox (and Manny to the Rangers). Part of the deal was that ARod would take a cut in salary.

The players' union blocked the trade based on the cut in salary.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, WTF? That would be like my bank selling my mortgage to another bank, and the new bank getting to jack the interest rate up on me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except that A-rod volunteered for the pay cut - assuming that's what your analogy is referring to.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, this gets more interesting. So the players' union actually prevented someone from taking a deal that was agreeable to both the players involved and the management just because less money was involved?

Like I said, I know zero about MLB business dealings. I don't keep up with baseball at all really. I'm just wondering what the union's angle was here. Does this somehow hurt other players in the aggregate if allowed to happen?

The CBA required that the union approve the deal. If they approved a deal that allowed a player to cut his compensation (here, I believe, it was actually the deferral of compensation that could have saved the Sox million), it could be used as precedent (the union's approval, not the actual contract) should owners pressure lesser players to reduce their contracts. I don't know if I necessarily buy it -- but that is what some labor lawyers were saying at the time.

OK. That sort of fits with the point Golic was making - if you think A-Rod is making "too much" $$$, blame the union.

Thanks.
