If they approved a deal that allowed a player to cut his compensation (here, I believe, it was actually the deferral of compensation that could have saved the Sox million), it could be used as precedent (the union's approval, not the actual contract) should owners pressure lesser players to reduce their contracts. I don't know if I necessarily buy it -- but that is what some labor lawyers were saying at the time.
