Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
I agree the headline doesn't do the game justice, it's hard to do that game justice.

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
actually Phoenix College made it to the semis, which seems weird considering the Republic only mentioned their first round win and then their loss in the semis, and nothing of their results in the intervening rounds

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
i went to school btw at Columbia College which dominated D3 women's volleyball winning something like 170+ consecutive games a few years ago. Then the coaches left to coach at Mizzou and I don't know how good they've done at D1.

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
Kishwaukee actually beat Hagerstown by similar scores in the quarterfinals.
NCAA D1 volleyball is all about recruiting, really. |

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
Also, the teams that won in the first round played really late Thursday night in the quarterfinals, so that may be why the absense of news on that match in the Republic.

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
I'm a traditionalist when it comes to scoring. Rally-point is bad IMO because it overly hinders the ability of teams that are behind to come back. It seems like if you get a side out then hold serve for two or three points in a row then you can cruise. It's even more extreme with bigger leads. A team that is up 7 or 8 is basically a lock whereas comebacks of 6 or 7 with the old scoring weren't too uncommon.

your article should include tl;dr cliffs in the beginning or something. I cant read over 2 paragraphs continuously without my eyes bleeding. Next year i may or may not have health insurance and get this checked out. Till then, work on the cliff notes.

Re: Off Topic — Cool story IMO
Jared,
While I agree with you that comebacks were a little easier to do under traditional scoring, you'd be surprised how many actually still happen. I've seen leads of as many as 10 points in high school games (which only go to 25) vanish, and it's not rare at all for teams to come back from 4 or 5 down. I think rally scoring gives the game a faster, fresher feel. It seemed like every third or fourth match I covered under the old system dragged endlessly with tons of side-outs and not much scoring at all, so games took half an hour or more (and matches, if they went 5 games, could go three hours). In rally scoring this doesn't happen (well, unless the final score is 55-53 LOL), games keep moving toward a conclusion at all times and generally take 20 minutes tops (and 5-game matches are often done in under 2 hours). |
