Here's what I got for 1.4 so far:

<font color="white">The professor's name is Reabus, so it's a pretty clear rebus type thingamjig. W^ = W-hat, :el = colon-el, @e = at-e, so that gives What Colonel Ate, and then the c&lt;--s portion. This is weird to me, car-rows? </font>

also I solved 1.4
<font color="white">The arrow is really a "hook", making What colonel ate "chooks". Chooks in australia means chicken, so the answer is sanders. </font>

sorry, too busy with my upcoming trip to work on this this week...great puzzles that i'd love to go through at a later time, but no time to solve during the competition
