Re: City to visit in Europe for a weekend?
I like Amsterdam, but the whole liberal thinking/living-aspect is overhyped, most other big Northwestern European cities are similar, they have more liberal rules so that drug use/prostitution etc. is more visible than elsewhere but their way of living really isn't. It is a very nice city and great city to party, but does not stand out enough to deserve the hype IMO.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] barcelona. amsterdam kinda sucks. [/ QUOTE ] barcelona is fantastic, but a lot of that is due to great weather, which you won't find in feb. [/ QUOTE ] Barcelona and it's not close, unless you love visiting museums then consider Florence. [/ QUOTE ] or if you love food and wine, than Paris. or if you love weed, then Amsterdam. or if you love beer, then Brugge. or if you love skiing, then go to the Alps or.... Re: City to visit in Europe for a weekend?
it depends what you want to do:
Amsterdam great obv if you want to party & smoke weed Paris has so many cool sights, is beautiful all over and the Eurostar is a quality way to travel - its only about 2.5hrs from central london to central paris and very comfy. On the downside we found it hard to get any good nightlife going there but maybe we just didn't know the right spots. Other nice places within reach are Bruges (belgian beer rules), Edinburgh (amazing castle & town centre) and dublin for the irish craic |

Re: City to visit in Europe for a weekend?
Paris is more styly and also more expensive if you want to eat good food, have a nice hotel, go to a nice bar etc., whereas Amsterdam is more relaxed, so they definately have a different feel. To Paris you need to bring more money and nicer clothes, Paris on a small budget is lame. Paris is more sophisticated, but if you go to the right places it is sophisticated but not pretentous, a combination rare to find.

Re: City to visit in Europe for a weekend?
amsterdam, if you ignore the cafes, is just about the most average, boring city in western europe. yeah, it's got some nice things going for it, including the rijksmuseum and amstelkring, but on the whole it's just another midsized city. might as well go to manchester or leeds. the food, especially, is subpar. (unless you like american style chinese).
copenhagen, imo, is a similar city that is in every way superior. there is much greater variety of things to see and do, and the food is much better. |

[/ QUOTE ] probably not. I mean you should see both at some point, but Paris has a whole lot more to offer in most regards, including hookers! |

[/ QUOTE ] amsterdam is a beautiful city. i went there and stayed 3 nights and didnt do any drugs. there is so much to see and do. touring anne franke's house was the best part of europe for me. i had goose bumps the entire time i was in the building. i wasnt even really planning on going and went at the last minute. amsterdam has wonderful museums, parks, architecture, canals, etc. paris is nice and im sure you already know what's there. so much you cant see in a weekend. brugge is also a nice town that someone mentioned. great architecture w/ canals running through the city. it's a small town though. barcelona is a damn fine city. seville is great. i dont care much for madrid. |
