Re: Several Hotshots Supposedly Broke Or In Debt
[ QUOTE ]
Can someone post cliff notes? [/ QUOTE ] DS is mildly irked because he thinks some people he considers to be lesser players than himself, have an inflated reputation because of hot previous streaks. In actual fact, their long-run winrates are nothing spectacular. He writes a post to point this out. JS is more than slightly irked that DS has an inflated reputation because he wrote a bunch of books back when nobody knew how to play poker. He thinks DS would be a break even player in a tough online midstakes game today. He writes a post which doesn't say this but attacks the original post which was largely true (but not very NVGworthy). I could be wrong about both motivations. I could also be right and DS and JS don't realize it. |

crancspanc....great post, loved reading your take on "the poker boom" and the future of the game... the flip-side of your argument would be that there are certain poker stars who have realized that raking pots will only take you so far...I assume they are convinced that putting themselves in front of the camera is another form of income... self-promotion, sponsorship deals, tv commercials, magazine articles, etc is replacing 14hour sessions of a juicy poker game where you could earn big money [/ QUOTE ] Not a bad point, this can explain some of it for sure. |

Re: Several Hotshots Supposedly Broke Or In Debt
Cliff's Notes :
BELARIUS How you speak! Did you but know the city's usuries And felt them knowingly; the art o' the court As hard to leave as keep; whose top to climb Is certain falling, or so slippery that The fear's as bad as falling; the toil o' the war, A pain that only seems to seek out danger I' the name of fame and honour ; which dies i' the search, And hath as oft a slanderous epitaph As record of fair act; nay, many times, Doth ill deserve by doing well; what's worse, Must court'sy at the censure:--O boys, this story The world may read in me: my body's mark'd With Roman swords, and my report was once First with the best of note: Cymbeline loved me, And when a soldier was the theme, my name Was not far off: then was I as a tree Whose boughs did bend with fruit: but in one night, A storm or robbery, call it what you will, Shook down my mellow hangings, nay, my leaves, And left me bare to weather. GUIDERIUS Uncertain favour! BELARIUS My fault being nothing--as I have told you oft-- But that two villains, whose false oaths prevail'd Before my perfect honour, swore to Cymbeline I was confederate with the Romans: so Follow'd my banishment, and this twenty years This rock and these demesnes have been my world; Where I have lived at honest freedom, paid More pious debts to heaven than in all The fore-end of my time. But up to the mountains! This is not hunters' language: he that strikes The venison first shall be the lord o' the feast; To him the other two shall minister; And we will fear no poison, which attends In place of greater state. I'll meet you in the valleys . |

Re: Several Hotshots Supposedly Broke Or In Debt
I guess you can post whatever you want when you own the website, even fluff like this. I'm sure most posters on here understand the huge financial swings the top players subject themselves to at the stakes they play for, and that many posters may be privy to the financial status of some of the top pros, but most of these posters have respect for the pros who may be on a downswing so as not to appear like they're "piling on," which is more than I can say for Mr. Sklansky.
While Mr. Sklansky may be trying to make a point that is well taken, to me his post comes off as a cheap shot and an attempt to stir the gossip pot where absolutely nothing can be gained by suggesting players' names under the guise of saying he can't mention them. These insinuations without substantiation take NVG to a new low, and even if Mr. Sklansky's claims about certain poker players being broke are correct, I would expect a man of his reputation and stature to refrain from posting any such information as a matter of professional courtesy. Also, add my name to those who appreciated Jason Strasser's well written post. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Can someone post cliff notes? [/ QUOTE ] David says a lot of big-name cash-game players are broke. Most of 2+2 says "duh." Strassa rips David for being a nit. People pile on. David says he may be a nit, but don't glorify the degenerate gamblers like they're some kind of Teddy Roosevelt. I'm sure others can do better. [/ QUOTE ] Actually I'd give it an A-. [/ QUOTE ] B- and only that high because of Strassa's post. The obviousness of your OP started it off at a C. The fact that so many people complained about the lack of names brought it down to a D+ and Strassa's OTT reply gave it legs all the way to a B-. TStone's post looked like it would contribute but died on the vine. The only thing left is for Admo to come in and jack it up to an A. |

Re: Several Hotshots Supposedly Broke Or In Debt
[ QUOTE ]
i think your post is a bit uncalled for and i also feel that most people who saluted you did so because they love seeing a bloodbath, not because they believe that david deserves your comments. while some of what you say is certainly spot on, its over the top. why would you want david to leave nvg? just because he gave a 5/10 in nvg contributions? there are hundreds of others who contribute less than he does. why dont we ban barryg because he only posts once a month? maybe david's intentions were to educate readers by painting a picture of high stakes poker in its truist form, not to tear down the images of good people whove tried hard to establish them. isnt that a noble intent? what gives you the right for judging david on being a "lazy genius"? are you that much better? as poker players we are all leeches on others and provide no productivity for our time. im sure your wall street job will go on to save starving children in africa while reducing CO2 emissions. yes, david clearly revels in receiving gratification from the masses, but i also think its quite clear that he does enjoy educating people. he even has ambitions of writing the most effective book for teaching children algebra. not everyone spends their life dedicating themselves to noble causes. most do what makes themselves happy, and most people would be lazy if they could afford to be. youre a really good guy in person, but your post makes you come off as a spoiled brat. [/ QUOTE ] Its a motherhubbard battle royale up in here. I gotta side with TStone ldo. Theory Of Poker is one of the most influential books i've ever read. How many masterpieces does one need to not be labeled an underachiever? |
