I could use some advice from my fellow Loungers.
I am buying a new car and have never gone through the price negotiations. I have found the car after shopping around, looking at new and slightly used. Also looking at lease vs buy. Buying is preferable given the amount of driving I do. So, how best to negotiate the best price? (Utah is not a lot of help on this as he has never purchased a new car) |

Find out what month the new models come in, and negotiate to get a brand new last-year's model for many thousands less. Worked for me.
Let them know that you know they are just taking up space and losing money with last year's model, and that the book value on it will plunge even more than a regular new car will as soon as it's driven off the lot. Catastrophically, pretty much. You should be compensated for that, and they are are paying money to have that ever worse choice of a car around day by day, and a lot of it. Tell them they can cut their losses and get the old car out of their hair and get something in there that will sell better at a guaranteed higher profit margin. There's only one way that car's price is going to go, and it is DOWN. So, you both win if they just bite the bullet and stop fighting a lost cause and get that car the hell off their lot for the dirt cheap price you'll buy it off them -- which should indeed be dirt cheap. This is how my friend, an ex car salesman told me to do it, and I got a car for a third less than my roommate paid for the exact same model, exact same year. They may be surprised to hear this, but it's completely true and solid fact. They can hold out for pie in the sky, like some dumbarse buying last year's model instead of this year's model, but that's not gonna put any money in their pocket. Here you are with money. They don't want it and would rather continue to lose money every day? If they don't understand math or logic, you're out of luck. |

Speculation running rampant about the reasons for NYC Mayor Bloomberg's decision to switch Party affiliations again, to Independent. Could be a surprise 3rd Party candidate in '08.

Getting a good price on the car is pointless if the dealer kills you on the financing. Which they will try to do. Check out the sweatroom they lock you into to work out 'easy monthly payments'. |

Hmm, when we had that controversial 'is Bush an embarrassment' thread going on, this forum was really lively and moving - lots of discussion, lots of good threads happening. Since I locked it, it's gone REAL quiet.
Was it a coincidence? Did I do a stupid thing in locking it? A few people have said they thought it was cool, but I wasn't keen on how it was going at all. Thoughts plz. |

I stopped reading it after responding to the first post that took the line of personally insulting me. It was inevitable, as was your locking it. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, which is a tribute to the overall reasonableness people usually try to exhibit here in the Lounge. But those topics are playing with fire.
