However, like I said, once I got "in there", past his feet, he didn't seem able to recover and I could punch ( it seemed ) at will. [/ QUOTE ] So were there some sort of rules in place toward the both of you? Because a traditional Muay Thai fighter doesn't like to use distance to their advantage. Muay Thai fighters love to be in close, so they can use the clinch where they throw their knee and elbow combinations. If you were able to get in close and do damage, then this guy sucked. He sucked balls. A real fighter would have locked you up, and busted your nose and jaw with repeated knees, then if you didn't go down, you get an overhand elbow above your left eye, and if that didn't drop you, it's a round house to your temple. When I spar against other Thai boxers in my gym, elbows are not allowed, and neither are knees to the face. They are "simulated" so as not to bust the other guys face open. |

[/ QUOTE ] You are correct -- I merely said "thai-style" and I was mostly referring to the roundhouses -- kicks to the legs, kicks to the head. There were no knees to the face, elbows to the head etc... and none of the cinch locks. ... and, no, this guy definitely did not "suck". From my experience, his kicks were easily in the top 2 percent of anyone I've fought, which is a bunch. I'm confident if he came to your gym, you would have no trouble turning him into an excellent Thai fighter in no time at all. "a real fighter would've locked me up" and a "real fighter" could ~try~ to tie me up, but he still has to get past my punches, which aren't bad, and i can throw knee strikes to the jaw myself, and elbows, so tieing me up wouldn't exactly by the end-all. But, yeah, there are rules, we're just sparring buddies; we're not trying to kill each other for car titles. |

Re: i finally fought a Thai-style Fighter...
that's cool. I train mma and our stand up is mostly western boxing + thai kicking techniques. Karate stuff seems less useful to me for mma, but from a pure stand-up kind of game i guess it could work.
Also, if you ever feel really brave, do it with knees vs. a good muay thai fighter. You most certainly will not be so eager to bull rush in after that. |

Its always the low ones that hurt the worst in my experience. A well placed knee to either the thigh where the muscle splits or the bundle of nerves on the back of the tight will deaden your leg and make it hard as hell to rush or put much on your puches on that side.. Congrats on getting in there and fighting though. As a side note, do you think Karate would be effective in MMA as an aspect of standup. Seems like a couple guys have a background in Kempo and other forms, but I havent ever trained in it to know if parts of it work (or are already used) |
