Edwards Backs Mandatory Preventive Care

``It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care,'' he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. ``If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK.''

This dude is S C A R Y. Talk about a power grap and the potential for abusing power. Is this even constitutional? The lawyers who read this forum should be able to shed some light. I assume that there's a penalty for not showing up for your check ups. What would it be? Jail? Pay a fine??? Booted out of the system? WTF????

Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans.

Mandatory mental health check ups???? Probably not but maybe but if not the door is certainly open.

This is an idea from a Democrat that has a great deal of potential to do a lot of harm IMO. Unbelievable really.

Are you trying to imply that there is something wrong with mandatory mental health treatment? Mentally unstable people are a drain on society (not to mention the fact that most of them use illegal drugs) and have to be dealt with for the benefit of the productive, loyal citizens. Besides, you don't have anything to worry about unless you're unhinged yourself, so why don't you chill out? You don't have trouble managing your anger do you?

I would think so. I guess the government would have ready access to each and all citizens medical records too. Maybe not immediately but I could see it going that way easily.

I had to read this twice to get the humor. The long term implications of this are indeed scary. Much of what I hear Edwards say only hurts people. For example his idea of doubling the capital gains tax. Looks good on the surface but like everything else that comes out of his mouth, just a bunch of manipulative bs. And much of which the general public is eating up. He is gaining a great deal of support from Unions as his socialistic ideas grow in popularity.

According to Mr. Edwards, if you disagree with his health plan you don't think every American deserves health care.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course! This is probably the most common smear tactic in the universe. I come up with a plan called "Save the Children from Horrible Predators" which involves putting a bunch of money in a cannon and shooting it at the moon. I ask you for money for the cause, and when you say "no" I go tell all your neighbors about how you hate children and support predators.

You see it all the time. You can see it right now in the "major GOP scandal" thread in this forum, where guids basically says anyone who bashes bush is really a closet Democrat fanboy. You see it when people say that if you support unregulated economic activity, you must support starving kids.

Basically it comes down to people who only consider *intent* and don't think about the consequences. These people assume that if someone opposes their plan, it must be because that person disagrees with their *motivation* - when in reality, it's often the case that they disagree with the *particular tactics*.

since some people don't want it in the first place.

[/ QUOTE ]

who wouldnt want health insurance?

[/ QUOTE ]

Anybody with a big enough bankroll to not want to make a -EV decision because he's averse to variance.

[/ QUOTE ]

Huh? Aversion to variance would make insurance more attractive even if you have a large bankroll. Smoothing of variance is precisely the purpose of insurance.

Yes, that is probably what he meant, but its worded awkwardly if it is.
