Re: Please tell me about these 3 majors

[ QUOTE ] English, Spanish, Communication are all 3 worthless? what sort of jobs/salary can one get with these majors? Thank you. [/ QUOTE ] Hope you want to be a teacher... Seriously, these major's don't help you out in the real world all that much. Comm maybe, but good luck trying to distiguish yourself from all the other comm majors. [/ QUOTE ] this is just the kind of narrow-minded thinking in this forum that makes me laugh yes, as an academic discipline, communications or english won't be as respected as engineering or biology. and sure, your starting salary won't be as much. but to think that someone is limited to becoming a teacher by what major they choose is completely ridiculous. |

Re: Please tell me about these 3 majors
yeah, you ahve a point. What you mak of yourself is ultimately more important than what degree you have. But putting yourself in the best possible situation to succeed obviously makes it easier. For most people that means going with a harder major.

Re: Please tell me about these 3 majors
I can tell you without a doubt that English is a major that you get out what you put in. You can do absolutely nothing and get a 3.0 and float through college. You can also actually learn a hell of a lot and get a 4.0...but I'm not sure it really helps you in terms of employment, it just helps you get smarts.

Re: Please tell me about these 3 majors
i still think that people put too much emphasis on an actual major as opposed to the most important factors in getting jobs: networking, connections, your personability and your previous work experience. A particular major (imo) is only paramount if you really, really want to work in a particular industry. just my two cents.

[/ QUOTE ] Why would you choose a major and go into a line of work that has nothing to do with it? IMO what really matters in getting a job is how well you interview. The best way to get an interview is by having something on your resume that stands out from the rest. Those majors don't do that alone and there is a reason why no one in the working world (besides PR/advertising) doesn't take those majors seriously. They are easy and usually populated w/ kids who don't know what they want to do. Not exactly the cream of the crop for potential employers. Try sifting through resumes once and you'll know what I'm talking about. |
