Re: The Best E-mail Scam Ever
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] It's called a 419 death threat. Apparently it's the new MO. FBI warning [/ QUOTE ] Wow that example letter linked was much stupider and less scary than the OP's. What's 419 mean anyway? [/ QUOTE ] From wiki: The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (part of Chapter 38: "Obtaining Property by false pretences; Cheating") dealing with fraud. |

You may verify by checking his eyes for fear, should he still be willing to let you approach. I will be paying a visit to your home again shortly. But not for the dog. I am a professional. |

Re: The Best E-mail Scam Ever
I have a strong urge to screw with this guy. I want to start taunting him about how I went out last night, dare him to tell me the names of five of my co-workers, friends, neighbors etc.
I'd love it if some of my buddies from the internet wrote him back and told him that if he ever came near me, they'd come after him, as I had given them all his contact info. I'd even be tempted to try and turn it around by threatening to reveal his identity to the police if he did not pay me. There's all kinds of fun possibilities, here. |

Re: The Best E-mail Scam Ever
Thanks,
I sent a complete copy of the e-mail to the FBI, including the address it was from. Prolly a bot or a zombie on someone elses computer, however. |

Re: The Best E-mail Scam Ever
[ QUOTE ]
I don't understand why all of these use the "someone you know has paid me money to kill you" scenario. Why not just cut out the middleman and threaten to kill the person directly? It seems like that would be scarier and more likely to work. That's how I'd do it if I were to take up internet death-threat blackmailing, anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I suppose the intrique aspect of the whole someone-you-know-paid-me-to-kill-you is supposed to bring you in. Obviously, if this was a real hit man, his reputation would suffer greatly if he tried to extort his marks. Chances are someone would get the info back to the person who hired him and then he'd be in real trouble. I was entertained for about 2 minutes with the thought someone I knew would think enough of me to want me dead. Then, I was reading the e-mail carefully and discovered there was not a single shred of personally identifiable information about me specifically. Not my name, my city, my phone number or anything. That was the big tip off it was a new kind of spam. Suprising, really. |
