Shouldn't this be five to two? [/ QUOTE ]Hi JSchell - No. To see it clearly for yourself, take sixteen white chips and make a stack. Each white chip will represent one small bet. Thus each two white chips will represent one big bet. Now add four more white chips and two blue chips for each betting round. The white chips and the blue chips have the same value, but the blue chips represent your own contribution on the last two betting rounds. We don't count what you've already contributed on the first two betting rounds because those chips don't belong to you any more. (They belong to the pot). But when it's your turn to act on the 3rd betting round, anything you contribute to the pot will be what it will henceforth cost you to continue (and which is still yours). You should have 24 white chips and 4 blue chips in the pot. Now make two equal sized stacks with all four blue chips on top of one stack. When you win half the pot, you win the stack with the blue chips. The stack with the blue chips should have ten white chips (five big bets). That's what you win when you don't have to split the low half of the pot. You win five big bets. You'll risk one big bet (on the third betting round) rather than risking two big bets because if the river is unfavorable, you'll fold. You'll thus risk one bet to possibly win five. That's 5 to 1. But now, to represent getting quartered for low, divide the stack with the four blue chips and ten white chips in half. There should be four blue chips and three white chips in this stack. Instead of winning ten white chips when you win half of the pot, you only win three white chips when you get quartered. You risk two blue chips (not four, because you'll fold if you don't make your low on the river. And you stand to gain three white chips when you win. That's 3 to 2. See it? Buzz |

I actually wasn't too worried about a naked A2 calling...With a board of that texture I hadn't seen anybody get really "out of line" and chase with just a naked A2...Even in a pot that big... [/ QUOTE ] No one, and I mean no one, in that game is folding a naked nut low draw on the turn in a pot this big. Most of them aren't folding A2 here even for multiple bets, and absolutely none are folding for one. Despite the risk of being quartered, in a passive game, you have a very easy call. |
