Film noir is a great genre. Its trade is dealing with society from the rotten bottom up to the rotten core at the top. This brings a whole lot of the world into play at once, making it easy to shift between all sorts of characters and settings to add color and interest. It also automatically suggests moral questions and sometimes even deeper ones about society in general that broadens the movie naturally, without it feeling forced or extraneous. It can have a "get real" quality to it about how life really works that can be refreshing, funny, and leads to great performances and exciting situations as a matter of course. It's a natural for artistic expression through lighting, staging, composition, intriguing and witty and soulful dialogue, and pretty much any artistic flapdoodle you can think of. Its inherent build around a puzzle that needs to be solved encourages a gratifying sort of attention and alert participation in what's unfolding onscreen so as to figure out what's really going on and is likely to unfold. The puzzle or mystery of it tends to give it a natural story arc and understandable conclusion. It's something every guy in the street can enjoy as much as the most rarefied intellectual. And it consistently brings the best out of directors and writers.

The guy that directed the grifters also did Dirty, Pretty Things, which is a superb movie. |
