Direct IM just means the packets of data go from their computer to your computer, instead of from their computer to a server to your computer. They cant run arbitrary code on your computer unless you accept a file download and then run it.

And as long as you have a firewall running you should be safe even if you have a keylogger running. Just make sure no unknown program is allowed network access.

I think you are somewhat correct in that it is probably slightly safer not to be in Direct IM mode. It is possible but unlikely that there is some hidden exploit in AIM or GAIM or whatever client you use that would allow somebody in Direct IM mode to send some magical command that caused trouble, and/or because with direct IM they would learn your IP address which would make it easier for the attacker to find any sort of exploit on your system.

This would probably be impossible in normal mode because I would assume the central server would automatically throw out all invalid messages. And also by never entering Direct IM mode with a potential attacker, it would ensure they could not figure out your IP address through this avenue.

i dont get it, just don't type in your password...

I dont know how it works on different sites or what but I'v always had pokerstars just save my password in there so i just click log in and it goes, i don't type anything. Do most people do that or is it too risky? im the only one that uses my computer and i dont have thousands in there like most of you guys, i play poker receational and if i lost my roll it wouldn't effect me much anyway so i'm not worried...

1) NEVER ACCEPT ANY DIRECT TRANSFER CRAP OVER AN IM SERVICE

2) NEVER JOKE ABOUT HACKING THROUGH AN IM SERVICE

because it will make both parties basically miserable.
