I voted Tiger, but I would not be at all disappointed/suprised if Tagliabue got it. More I think about it, Tagliabue deserves it for what Mason said, lifetime achievement.

I wish they had given it to Pat Tillman in 2004.

Paul Tagliabue for lifetime achievement.

It's possible. Rozelle won it in 1963. But Tom Brady won it last year, and they don't like to give it to consecutive recipients from the same sport.

As said before, it would be Tiger's third win (and nobody else has even won it more than once). Federer seems like the default selection, but tennis has dropped off the public radar so much- the last tennis player to win it was Arthur Ashe, and more for his AIDS activism than his career (he got it more than a decade after he retired). I don't think Federer does enough off the court.

It's a tough one, but it feels like they might have to go outside the box somehow. Was anybody remarkable in Torino this year? (Besides those sisters on the U.S. women's curling team, I mean)

"For What" is an interesting question, but not in the way you are using it, I suspect.

If it is an interesting question then feel free to address it.
Personally, I think you can make a much better case for him getting Time Magazine's Man of the Year than SI's Sportsman of the Year.

I think I'd vote Tiger. Although I think it's always difficult to compare individual athletes to team sports athletes.

Golf-Tiger

Basketball-D-Wade?? LeBron's probably the league's best player, but Wade did the most to help his team win a championship.

Baseball-?????

Football-Peyton

Soccer-Et'o, Ronaldhino? Buffon?? Cannavaro??? Not one player was particulary dominate in the Champions League AND the World Cup. Plus given that SI is an American magazine, I'd imagine any footballer would have to totally dominate his sport in order to win.

To add on to this, Pele never won the award, but the U.S. Women's soccer team (what a joke)did.

It wasn't Pele vs the US Women's soccer team.

The U.S. womens soccer team winning the World Cup was a huge story. It was literally the only time all my friends have gathered to watch and root for a Women's sporting event. They deserved that award. They got Americans to care about womens sports and soccer, 2 things that traditionally get little attention here. They were as deserving as any recipient ever.
