Re: nyc bust
Does anybody think it's because of less police corruption? I know that when they had a corruption scandal in Toronto. They claimed that detectives protected night clubs, so it's not a stretch to think games weren't protected. In the past NYC has had scandals where the police protected bordellos....

Re: nyc bust
lefty - its seriously best to not discuss why. If the reasons why became commonly known then eventually it leaks to the press (like it always does) and thats just bad news for everyone. Some things in life you must grin and bear it.

people will still try however...a new one will pop up eventually. [/ QUOTE ] You can always tell the newcomers (for what its worth i consider myself to be a newcomer too) to the NY Poker world when they make a statement like that, they old timers know that there will always be a game somewhere, but they also understand that it might be hard to get in it. For many years there were only 1-2 rooms in NY maximum spreading only a handful of games, that changed 4 years ago with the advent of the mega-rooms. So in some ways the current situation is the status quo. The days of large multiple rooms spread around the city are done, loose lips sunk ships. |

Re: nyc bust
Alot of the games have moved outside Manhattan, the rooms seem to draw much less attention in the suburbs here, it probably wouldn't be the same in smaller cities. The poker economy is too big to dissapear, there are quite a few people who count on the underground rooms to earn a living whether through dealing, operation the floor, providing security or even as a prop player. As long as you are a decent person that people deem trustworthy you will find a few games, ****************************. A small piece of advice I can offer any players is to befriend a few of the dealers who seem good at their job, the ones that seem to know alot of the other players personally. Tip them well, treat them with respect and exchange phone numbers. They always know where the next game is and sometimes their reference is the only way to get introduced to a game.

Re: nyc bust
Fishcakes that is really good advice.
I had befriended a few dealers (and tipped them well too) but never exchanged phone numbers. That would have been a great thing to do. |
