Re: Update: I Can Do It
Counter to this angling: Flash a gloating, joyous expression whether you are beat or not when the angler flashes his cards. Use a vidcam to get it right. Practice in home games.

Re: Update: I Can Do It
Agreed, one could surely play dumb against this move.
"Oh no you have a SET!? (frown) Oh wait you haven't called yet? (sniff)" <wait for actual call, then show your straight> "YES! <prepare to table cards> Wait, did he call? Oh." <tricksy hobbit now folds, so muck your bluff> |

Re: CONCLUSION
It's like shooting hand fed deer on private land and calling it a "hunt".
It requires less skill. You might as well be a video poker player. |

Re: Am I Chasing a Rainbow Here?
In the old days of poker, angle shooting was part of the game. It could lead to a hot score. The rules have changed. It is best to go with the rules used in the WSOP everywhere, especially home games.
We used to show each other one card, or lay our hand face up in Kansas City Low-ball, say we had a Jack and the other guy had moved in. Either he is bluffing or he is not. A major move was asking people to split the pot. Sometimes you would show one card or your whole hand and ask to split it. Maybe you make up your mind not to call, then you start trying to talk for a split. When I was very young, playing with Bill Smith, champ of 85, the board came all spades. We both checked. He showed me the trey of spades to claim the pot. The deuce wasn't out there so he screwed me. We were great friends, angle shooting was part of the game then. It is not now. In Vegas, you can ask a guy to split the pot when you know the dealer will speak up to stop a split. That's an angle shoot. Telling someone they can see either of your cards is an angle shoot. Asking to run them or no more betting is not an angle shoot although I have had someone get really mad when I drew out after talking them into stopping betting. Angle shooting used to be part of the game. Now is is considered unethical if not illegal. It the old days, out right cheaters were barred. More people should be barred these days. What Doyle wrote thirty years ago is not the baseline standard. It is 2007. Johnny Hughes |

Re: Am I Chasing a Rainbow Here?
I have encountered this issue a few times playing at Crown casino in Aus. I'll make two points on the matter.
1. What Doyle said on this was stated a long time ago and the game has changed in may ways since his SS book. One change is the attitude to flipping your cards to get a read in a cash game - but like any poker issue, it varies from place to place and card room to card room (and unfortunately from staff member to staff member all too often). 2. At Crown they don't "allow" you to flip your cards during the play of the hand. However, they don't disqualify a player from a hand when he does it either. They give him a warning .... pfft. Conclusion: It is bad form and generally not allowed but in my experience you'll get away with it everytime. It might be different elsewhere but somehow I doubt it - I suspect overseas casinos employ monkeys instead of Galahs, but the result is the same. Good Luck |
