Re: Staying friends with people while net worth / income diverges
[ QUOTE ]
one thing i have experienced that many of you may have as well is that people tend to resent other's success more if they feel that the successful person didn't "earn" it. [/ QUOTE ] This is very true, but I have found that sometimes the negative reactions will tend to only come out in specific contexts. First year out of college I moved into an apartment with a really good friend and two guys I had never met. All of them were doing Teach for America, working brutal hours and not making that much. The two roommates I didn't know would brag to all of their guy friends about my ingenuity and make the poker success seem well deserved. Their female acquaintances got a very different story and I would even occasionally catch them saying things that were clearly intended to make me seem like a gambling degenerate. |

Re: Staying friends with people while net worth / income diverges
question for the older crowd: how many of you guys are still friends with people you went to high school with?
basically, I find that I'm much closer to my high school friends but situation has been much different for me. I only went to college for 1 year (and most of that was spent playing poker and not really hanging out THAT much, though I don't regret it cuz i love money), but I am now taking a year off for poker and I find that really the only people I speak to are old high school friend, fellow friends make through poker, and only college people here and there. But generally it seems like people would be more likely to maintain college friendships even though high school ones have lasted longer (in some cases going back to elementary school), and I really don't know where this is going but I sorta feel like in the future I won't have too many high school or college friends but will mostly be with other poker ppl. |

Re: Staying friends with people while net worth / income diverges
it might be a problem for you if you've always had the same group of friends. some people (like me) grow up with many different groups of friends, whether its due to varying interests or whatever. i have numerous clusters of friends that definitely wouldn't get along with the other clusters of friends. but that doesnt stop me from having a variety of really great friends... it's all about how you manage it. obv your filthy rich friends are not going to want to do the same stuff as your filthy poor friends, and you have to accommodate that.

OP, maybe you should rent the DVD of the season of Friends which contained the episode describing your very problem.
