As posted in the favourite book thread....

Before I read this I'd tried the gum, the patches, cold turkey and zyban pills, many times over with no success.

A co-worker was stopping and doing it pretty easy. I asked what her secret was and she told me about this book. I was sceptical at first, but for the price of a couple of packets I gave it a shot.

It doesn't go into the scare tactics you'd expect. It logically deconstructs any reason you think you have for smoking.

It obviously won't work for everyone, but I stopped easily after reading this. Two years and four months without a ciggie now, and I was a pretty heavy smoker

I smoked from age twelve to 23.

About 8 months ago I had a terrifying nightmare where I was in a hospital and my family was there. I couldn't breathe. I was going nuts trying to breathe but couldnt get any air. I woke up gasping. I quit smoking that day. I know it sounds gay but that dream scared the [censored] out of me.

To help I sucked on Icebreakers Sours. I ate so many the first few days my mouth was raw, but it helped . Now the only times I want to smoke are when I drink or sometimes first thing in the morning.

I went to order the Easy Way books, and the review just cracked me up. Last line: Buy it! It's cheaper than hypnotherapy!

Thanks for the suggestion about doing push-ups. I like that. Can't do it at work, but I'll definitely give it a shot at home.

I'll be taking a trip to the pharmacy later to see if they have any form of Zyban here. Any Brits used something like Zyban before? What was it called?

I may actually hold off on the drugs and see if I can kick this solo. The cold is going away, and the cravings have definitely been waiting in the wings...

Is there anyone else out there quitting right now?

FYI:

Zyban = Welbutrin = Bupropion

There's a new drug out called Chantix, which seems very promising. It has a different mechanism of action than any other smoking cessation product. Basically, it blocks the good feeling that comes from smoking. I haven't had any experience with it yet.

Good luck to all - quit smoking and put me out of business!

I have a coworker who is currently using Chantrix and it has worked up to this point. He has not smoked in a month and swears by the drug. Myself on the other hand, I really want a cigarette right now...

ok one trick i've used a few times is this:

when you really REALLLY have a strong craving and you're about to break down and smoke, you light up an imaginary cigarette. Well... don't go through those motions but just pretend you have a cigarette in your mouth and take a deep drag just like if it was really there. Purse your lips and inhale with the same force and everything. Imagine the feel of the smoke and whatnot. Then do a big exhale - pretend you're exhaling out a billowing cloud of smoke. Take a few drags of this invisible cigarette and the craving is gone.
