What stocks are bargains right now?

I'm having a lot of trouble finding index funds that aren't overloaded with financials and real estate and other junk I don't want. If there was an index fund of value companies with good P/E's that aren't speculating/over-leveraged and actually making a product that will do okay in a recession, I would be all over that.

Index funds are diversified and should give better risk-adjusted returns than individual stocks.

That's not a bad idea at all, but he does have a ton of insurance companies right? I remember reading that AIG is heavily involved in all this mess.

Yeah, today was a good day to own Berkshire - though it's been pretty much flat all year. Even with a decent amount of insurance I think it will ride this crisis out well. Some of Buffett's insurance holdings will end up benefiting from this.

Could people explain why they like Bank of America. It is far from attractive right now.

HERO and HLX. Both are growing very fast and have insanely low p/e ratios. Both have good debt situations. Both are in no danger because of the subprime problems but have been beaten up anyway. Both are somewhat correlated to natural gas prices which are almost certainly going to go up in the future.

This is so far from true. On a historical basis most stocks are overvalued still.
