science of sleep here are a few forieng ones i'll assume are obscure el norte jean de florette my life as a dog [/ QUOTE ] In my high school Spanish class in San Diego we had to see this mainly because of it's relevancy due to our proximity to Mexico. We also had to get waivers signed by our parents so we could see it because of some of the content. I've seen it multiple times since and its tragic nature still gets to me every time. An absolutely prolific movie and I implore Californians especially to watch it. |

Don't think this one's been mentioned?
Carandiru. Argentine/Brazilian collaboration released in 2003 about life in what was South Americas largest prison (the prison was demolished in 2002). At times hilarious and at times harrowing, definitely worth watching. |

Some very strong suggestions in the thread.
I nominate La Double Vie de Véronique (The double life of Véronique) by Kieslowski. |

Just thinking out loud about the OP...
The word 'obscure' is a relative term. For example, if you're 30 years old, does a movie that you've never seen from 1950 fall into your 'obscure' category? The reason that I bring this up is that there are SO many incredibly well done movies that were made in the 30's & 40's that perhaps many of you have never even heard of, never mind seen. Virtually everyone knows about "It's A Wonderful Life" because it's force fed to us every Christmas, bud did you know that there are so many more movies that many would consider much better? Have you ever heard of..... On Borrowed Time. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I Remember Mama. It's a damned shame that with so many cable channels that so few of these true masterpieces are rarely shown. If you're interested in poking around a bit, check out www.imdb.com.(International Movie Data Base) |
