in order from what is cheapest to most expensive and likely to be under $120/night and walk times.
1. Ambassador Hotel (Corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas; 1 block, 5 minutes) 2. Crowne Plaza (Corner of Bourbon and Canal; 5 blocks, 15 minutes) 3. Hilton Riverside (Corner of Poydras and Convention Center; 0.5 blocks) 4. Doubletree (Corner of South Peters and Canal; Across the street, literally 150' from the door to the casino) I've stayed at all of these and would recommend the Crowne Plaza. I have a room there on Saturday night and got it for $80 as I don't think the Essence Festival goers will be getting to town until Monday, although I could be wrong about that. |

the airport isn't really that close to Canal Street and Harrah's.
As mentioned, the prices for the hotels will probably be a bit steeper while you're there. Finally - WTF? Do you just never get to play live or something. You are only in New Orleans for one day and you are going to spend that day playing poker at Harrah's? You do that New Orleans is kind of a fun city, right? You should be spending your evening on Bourbon Street. And this really isn't even a close decision. New Orleans is my favorite city (not just Bourbon Street) and I feel very strongly that spending your 1 day there playing poker at Harrah's should be considered the ultimate lameo crime against life. |

Of course New Orleans is a great city, and make sure you get out some, but to be fair, it's very fun to win a couple/few hundred at Harrah's and plunk it down on a kickass meal. No shame in spending some time plying your trade.

Microbob,
I only play live, I am not single, i drink plenty as is, and have done the bourbon to decantur area of the quarter before. i will probably try to catch some good music and a hurricane or two but yeah im lame i want to check out the poker room too. i would have to agree more strongly with you if i had never been before or was intimately familiar with the city/had cool friends there. Im also a bit low on funds after life expenses getting in the way so i cant ball it up either, i like the idea of a sweet meal if i win a few bucks as another poster suggested. thanks for your concern it is well founded jason |

Mmmmmm...beignets at Cafe du Monde.
An absolute must stop in the quarter, for me anyway. |

I've stayed at the W, Wyndham, Hilton, and Doubletree--all very near Harrah's and all pre-Katrina. I'd rank them in the order listed. I will not return to Doubletree, but perhaps my bad experience there was an isolated one.
It is a real haul from the airport to downtown. I don't even like to drive that far on vacation I'd be shocked if the cab fare were only $25 as someone suggested above. |

Yeah staying out by the airport would be a terrible call for reasons already stated. Have fun in NO I will return there for schoolin in the fall.
