Re: So whats up with Palestine
[ QUOTE ]
Who is the legitimate palestinian government at this time (Hamas/Fatah? [/ QUOTE ] According to the most recent Palestinian elections, they both are: Abbas (Fatah) is the President and Hamas controls the Parliament. [ QUOTE ] What are the implications of Hamas controlling Gaza and Fatah the West Bank? [/ QUOTE ] Its unclear how the situation will affect Gaza outside of the regime change. For the West Bank, the US and EU are talking about lifting the sanctions they imposed after Hamas took over Parliament. I suppose Gaza will become more militant with Quassam rockets and whatever other resistance Hamas can muster while Gaza with the accompanying crackdowns by Israel, while the West Bank might improve with easing relation with Israel. [ QUOTE ] What does Israel think about this situation? [/ QUOTE ] I have no idea. I imagine the liberal Israelis are worried about the Palestinian people, while conservatives are thinking "As long as they are shooting at each other they can't shoot at us. |

[ QUOTE ] Who is the legitimate palestinian government at this time (Hamas/Fatah? [/ QUOTE ] According to the most recent Palestinian elections, they both are: Abbas (Fatah) is the President and Hamas controls the Parliament. [/ QUOTE ] Is this still the case? Abbas must have felt that he had the right to do what he did in setting up a new gov't. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] What are the implications of Hamas controlling Gaza and Fatah the West Bank? [/ QUOTE ] Its unclear how the situation will affect Gaza outside of the regime change. [/ QUOTE ] I believe on Monday, that both the US and EU announced that they would resume direct aid to the PA. |

Re: So whats up with Palestine
[ QUOTE ]
I imagine the liberal Israelis are worried about the Palestinian people, while conservatives are thinking "As long as they are shooting at each other they can't shoot at us. [/ QUOTE ] israel doesn't have liberals per se. Everyone (except bibi) is a liberal here. Its a more or less socialist country, but has become more and more capitalist in the last couple decades. Don't let that fool you though, taxes are still around Canada's rates, there's still a strike in some form every other week, and there's still lots of social security to go around. There is lots of entrepreneurial freedom, but taxes and the small market make it very difficult to start a significant business, relative to the USA, but much better than 90% of the world. So, if you mean leftys, then they are saying that Israel has a responsibility to let Arabs who are fleeing Hamas into the country or at least to the West Bank. There is universal hatred for Hamas, 100%, from all sides of the political spectrum here. Not even the lefties are deluding themselves with respect to that. The right is saying to cut off all electricity and supplies to Gaza (Israel has been supplying Gaza with electricity, food, water, gas, and a bunch of other things forever). The transfer of Fatah officials to the West Bank is being taken grudgingly, as its pretty common knowledge that the Fatah are just as murderous as the Hamas but without the religious conviction. In other words, they'll still slaughter you if they don't like you, but they'll consider talking to you about it first. At the heart though, there's a huge sentiment of "at least they're not doing it to us this time." |

Re: So whats up with Palestine
Maybe this is one beneficial effect of the Oslo accords... give the PLO guns so they can fight Hamas and allow the Palestinians to solve their domestic problems in the time honoroed Palestinian fashion. Maybe we can cross out 'kill the jews' in all their textbooks and replace it with 'kill eachother'.
