Re: overlay?
Overlay has a few different meanings depending on the context in which it is used.
The primary usage is in relation to tournaments. Overlay refers to a shortage of player funds in a guaranteed tourney. Say it was a $100 entry, $50k gtd tourney, and only 250 players registered, for a total of a $25k prize fund. The $25k that the poker room must put up to cover the guarantee is the "overlay". Essentially, in this tournament, every player's $100 entry had $200 equity the moment registration closed. The second, less common, definition for overlay occurs as it relates to cash (ring) play. "Overlay" is often used somewhat interchangeably with "dead money". Say that you decide to limp preflop after 2 limpers, and the button raises and it all folds back to you. At this point there is 3.5 bb of "overlay" or "dead money" in the pot, as it came from the blinds and two limpers who contributed to the pot, but now have no claim to it. Hope this helps. |
