Re: 17-year Cicada
[ QUOTE ]
Anyone experienced one of these before? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. [ QUOTE ] Is it really noticeable in the city? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. I remember the grass around the sidewalks bubbling with new life over by Hopkins when Brood X hit Maryland a few summers ago. [ QUOTE ] Are they gross? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, pretty much. They come up out of the ground, molt all over the place, make a [censored] ton of noise, and then die and leave crunchy carcasses all over the place. [ QUOTE ] Should I barricade myself indoors? [/ QUOTE ] Not necessary. They are totally harmless albeit slightly nauseating at times. |

Re: 17-year Cicada
[ QUOTE ]
I grew up in N. Illinois... and I remember these things. [/ QUOTE ] I was at a minor-league baseball game in Rockford, IL in 1992 that was delayed for several minutes because of a swarm of mayflies all hatching from the Rock River at the same time. It was insane. It was bad at first. Then got even worse and there was just no way they could play anymore so they had to delay the game and wait it out. The tall light standards went directly into the seating on the 1st and 3rd base side. The mayflies would eventually make their way up to the lights, get fried, and die and fall into the stands. So first was the delay of the game because the bugs were all over the field. Then a few minutes later all these fans in the seats who were mostly unaffected at the start ended up running screaming for their lives because it was raining dead-bugs on them and was really disgusting. Everyone left the seats to go under the stadium. Except for one guy who didn't leave his seat at all. He just held up an umbrella and kept sitting there while it was raining dead-bugs all around him. He must have really liked that seat. |

Re: 17-year Cicada
These little bastards showed up for my brother's college graduation about 3 years ago. I believe they were the 13 year variety. Like others have said, they are as loud as hell. Jon Stewart was the speaker that year, and he had to talk loudly to be heard over these things. He also busted out with a cicada joke or two.

[/ QUOTE ] I don't remember them being that loud when Stewart spoke, but they were insanely loud during commencement itself. They kept landing on people. I went out to lunch afterwards and noticed a giant one of them crawling on my arm like half an hour into the meal. I have a bunch of pictures of them somewhere--will post if I can dig them up. Bob Dylan wrote a song about getting an honorary degree during another locust year: http://www.princeton1970.org/index.a...mp;file=dylan. I remember they weren't evenly distributed from tree to tree, so occasionally you'd walk by a smallish tree that was just swarming with them, and it would be loud enough that you'd want to cover your ears. Such weird bugs. scrub |

Re: 17-year Cicada
Had them when I was in like 5th grade or something in my town. They were very loud, but I got pretty used to the noise IIRC. They weren't really that bad.. it wasn't like swarms of them everywhere or anything.

Re: 17-year Cicada
17 year cicadas are pretty repugnant; my exposure to them was probably the same brood tpir is talking about.
During that time, I was hanging out with some guys on their porch, and there were a few live cicadas on the screen door. Discussions began about how much money it would take to eat a live cicada. Most of us were squeamish, but one guy said he would do it for $9.50, but he required that the $9.50 include a Sacagawea dollar and a 50 cent piece. Unluckily for him, I'd recently been to Vegas - which, as far as I can see, is where 50 cent pieces go to die - and my roommate had hit the post office earlier that day and had the dollar. The cicada was, apparently, "not bad." |

Re: 17-year Cicada
Here in Az we would catch'em then proceed to tape them to the inside of a frisbee. Don't ask me why, just got a kick out of throwing a "buzzing" frisbee around. Also, they fit perfectly into the pouch of a Wrist Rocket.
