Help Me Pick A Bike

So I've decided I want to buy a motorcycle, but don't really know that much about them. I used to mess around on a few on my uncle's farm so I know how to ride, but need help picking. I have a friend who owns a Harley dealership and was thinking about getting a VROD, (I can get a discount and get a new 2007 for about 12k)... but have no idea if this is the best option for my price range (I'll go up to about ~15k).
