Default My CPU Fan is louder than an F-16 Jet Engine

I honestly think my CPU fan would compete on a decibel level vs. an F-16 Jet. In light of this massive aggravation, can anyone suggest a good replacement? I know compatibility is an issue so my current CPU is:

Intel Pentium Dual Core 3.2 Ghz

I'm also aware that some heatsinks out there are a nightmare to install i.e. some require you taking out the motherboard and some require PCI slots. That is something I'm not prepared to do not have space for. I basically want an easy to install, silent heatsink fan to install. It obviously needs to do it's job sufficiently in terms of keeping temp. down, too, though.

Thanks!

P.S. Are there dimension issues I should be aware of or do most fit in any mid-tower whatsoever?

Do you have a parts store in town? If so, you can try and remove the fan that is making the noise and take it down to the store to see what they have that is the same size. Make sure you know which fan is making the noise. Most any fan you get will be quieter than one that makes noise.

Your fan has the ability to run faster or slower when it has to. Is there a reason it's running at full tilt? Is it in the sun or does it have bad ventilation? Even the stock Intel fan shouldn't be jet-engine loud all the time.

P.S. My favorite quiet store

Hm. Hadn't thought about that Sam. I'm not a serious gamer and about all I do on my computer is one of the following:

(1) Surf the net
(2) Play Full Tilt Poker (6 no. tables max) + PT + PAHUD
(3) Chat on AIM
(4) iTunes

The usual crap.

I read the mobo manual and it says the fan/heatsink adjusts the speed of the fan accordingly. Even when it is sitting idle it's F-16 style though. The case isn't particularly good so I'm sure that is part of the problem. But I'm no where near capable of removing all the hardware and replacing it into a more sound proof case.

How would I adjust the speed of the fan without jeopardising the temperature??

In light of this, any suggestions? Oh and I discovered it's a 775 socket CPU.

Would it be helpful to place some kind of sound proofing pad on the side panel that is only used for opening the case?

Is this a "new" problem? new computer?

Flash a bios upgrade if there is one.

Do you know if the sink is three wire or four?
