Default Rocket-powered Lincoln Continental tries to jump over river

How is it that I never heard of this?

It's from the 1970's. Guy puts a rocket in his Lincoln, guns it up to 280 mph, and takes off from an 8-story high ramp, in an attempt to jump the St Laurence River from Canada to New York.

(Glad to see the Laughs/Links forum is back on its feet.)

If you're going to go to that much trouble to build a car and a huge ass ramp to jump over a river - maybe - you should consider some aerodynamics in the equation.

I bet it had enough velocity to make it over but there is no way that car was going to fly anywhere with those tiny wings on it.

He hardly even made it into the water.. I'd like to see someone actually attempt to jump it.

As soon as he hits the end of the ramp, the drogue chute deploys and the car slows down dramatically. I kind of wonder if he knew it wasn't going to make it and aborted it himself. I'd have to do the physics equations, but something tells me he never had a chance, and he knew it.
